Mexico-USA Prosperity and Security Initiative
Background
Mexico and the United States are inevitably intertwined for the simple reason that they share a 2,000-mile-long border. Nevertheless, cooperation between the two societies has ebbed and flowed over time. From the 1990s to the 2010s, the relationship between the two societies grew increasingly close. More recently, however, the relationship between Mexico and the United States has been fraying.
It is not possible, as a practical matter, for Mexico and the United States to isolate themselves from one another. Their shared border means that any attempt to address the concerns of either society—regarding law enforcement, national security, migration, the environment, or long-term prosperity—must take into account the policies of the other.
Our goal is to understand what has worked well in the relationship between Mexico and the United States, the areas where problems have emerged, and what actions can be taken to promote the common prosperity and security of both countries.
